Student Athlete: Melinda Hannon

Melinda Hannon, Student Athlete of the Week

When Melinda Hannon takes a swing, she’s doing so with one thing in mind.

“When I get out here I want to win.”

A senior at Poland, Hannon is as competitive as they come.  She’s a four year letter winner, and has helped the Lady Bulldogs qualify for state in two of her first three years.  Those deep tournament runs have helped her mental game improve as much as her swing.

“You’re not going to hit every shot perfect.  So you have to put it behind you and move on and make the next hole.  It’s like when you’re playing, you’re not playing your opponent you’re playing nine different games while you play nine holes.”

Whether it’s nine or eighteen holes, Hannon is tough to beat.  She drives the ball 215 yards.  But it’s her work around the greens that has allowed her to earn medalist honors in all but one of her matches this year.

“It definitely takes discipline.  You can’t just come out here for five minutes and you’re just like, oh okay I’m done.  You have to spend hours on your short game and putting if you’re going to see any improvement.”

A second team All-Ohio golfer, Hannon is top notch in the classroom too, posting a 3.9 grade point average.  She is also ranked in the top 10% of her class, and is a member of Spanish Club, Leadership, and National Honor Society.

“You know, I spend hours studying, but when I come out here it parallels my short game.  I have to be just as disciplined in the classroom as I am when I’m out here working on my short game.”
