Student Athlete: Chris Durkin

Chris Durkin

Chris Durkin has been a state champion on the football field, and a success in the classroom.

“My family and coaches have always told me, you know, if you push yourself to the best of your ability, good things will happen for you,” says Durkin.

And they certainly have.  The Ursuline senior is a standout football player, passing for over 15-hundred yards as a junior and rushing for another 11-hundred.  He was a 1st team All-Northeast Ohio selection, as well as a 2nd team All-State selection.  Durkin was also selected to represent WKBN’s Big 22.  All those accolades earned him a full ride football scholarship to Michigan State.

“It takes a lot of hard work.  Not only in the weight room and on the field, but also in the classroom,” he says.  “Without grades, you aren’t getting very far.  It starts in the classroom, and everything outside of the classroom will take care of itself.”

With a 3.6 grade point average, Durkin dedicates close to 20 hours a week to his school work and football.  Yet, he still finds time for community service projects.  He is a peer tutor, and works youth football camps every summer.

“They’re always there for us, supporting us at our games, win or lose, and it’s always good to give back to the community.  The more you give back to them, the more they’ll have your back or down the road if we ever need something, they can always go back to they helped us do this or they helped us do that, and they could possibly help us out.”
