POLAND, Ohio (WYTV) — People in Poland kicked off their Memorial Day by attending a community breakfast at the fire station.
The firefighters cooked up bacon, eggs and sausage for anyone who stopped by on their way to the annual Memorial Day parade, which began at the village center and ended at Riverside Cemetery. The parade route also stopped on the Main Street Bridge, where a wreath was thrown into the water to honor veterans who were lost at sea.
Among the parade participants was a group of patriotic children who decorated their bicycles in red, white and blue and pedaled in the parade. The idea comes from the Sons of the American Legion Mahoning Valley Squadron 15.
Parents said the bike parade is something they and their children look forward to every year.
“She likes to do the parades and celebrate the veterans. She spent a lot of time doing her bike last year and we wanted to do it again,” one dad said.
