Groups urge residents to Take a Stand

Groups organize in Youngstown

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WYTV) – Community organizers tackled some issues Saturday at a public meeting for change called Take a Stand Youngstown.

The event was hosted by United Returning Citizens, Mount Calvary Pentecostal Church and the Mahoning Valley Organizing Collaborative.

The goal was to develop a group of community members who want to begin being more active in the community and work on issues they care about such as voting rights, school reform, mass incarceration and retirement issues.

Saturday was about gauging interest and starting a movement. Local officials were invited including Youngstown Mayor John McNally.

“We are just sharing with them what we are about to do and if they want to join with us in that,” said organizer Wayne Huggins. “If not, we are still going to do it, but we would like their assistance. It would be a lot easier.”

Organizers said Mayor McNally has been very helpful so far, and they’re optimistic that other public officials will join in the movement.
