Tressel already active on YSU campus

YSU trustees meetings

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WYTV) — He may not be on the payroll yet, but Youngstown State University’s next president is already busy on campus.

Jim Tressel sat in on a series of quarterly committee meetings Tuesday afternoon with the university’s Board of Trustees. The one-time Penguin and Ohio State football coach was appointed last month to succeed Randy Dunn as YSU’s ninth president and he already has been spending quite a bit of time getting himself reacquainted with campus.

“He is engaged in meetings with people. He is here today for the Board of Trustees meetings. He was here last week for the Board of Trustees meetings. So he is very engaged and very involved in listening and learning,” said YSU spokesman Ron Cole.

Tressel is set to take over on July 1 unless trustees agree to bring him on sooner. He most recently served as vice president for student success at the University of Akron.

One of the first things the new president will have to deal with is an $8 million budget deficit, which will require the university to lay off some workers.

The Finances and Facilities Committee approved a budget on Tuesday that eliminates 15 positions university wide. The official announcement of the layoffs will come later this week when the workers are notified.

YSU employs about 1,200 people.
