Groundbreaking held for Boardman stadium

BOARDMAN, Ohio (WYTV) – Organizers pushing for a brand new athletic complex for Boardman High School said they are confident the Spartans will play games there in the fall of 2015.

On Friday morning, organizers broke ground for a $3.5 million facility on the high school campus on Glenwood Avenue that will one day serve as “home field” for the Spartan football and track programs, as well as the marching band.

The Boardman Booster Club is spearheading the athletic complex project.

Supporters said they have  raised about 25 percent of their goal, which will pay for a new artificial turf and give the project some much-needed momentum. They told the crowd the stadium project is more than just an investment in the school system.

“We are the Boardman community and I think, especially in the Mahoning Valley, Friday night football game is a community event. You got the concessions, you got fries, you got the band. There are thousands of people here. It is a big draw and it is a big community event. And we want to make sure we have a facility that matches that level of an event,” said Tim Saxton, Boardman Schools Director of Operations.

The current stadium is located next to Boardman Center Middle School, meaning football players and the marching band have to be bussed from the high school for home games, costing the district thousands of dollars each season.

Supporters of the project claim the new facility will save the system in transportation costs alone down the road.
