Heavy rains cause widespread flooding

I-680 ramp closed due to flooding

BOARDMAN, Ohio (WYTV) – Widespread, heavy rainfall across the Mahoning and Shenango valleys Tuesday night caused flooding issues for many communities.

In Campbell, Struthers-Liberty road at Tenney Avenue is under water. Police dispatchers said the area tends to flood when harsh storms roll through.

Drivers were moving slow in the area but no major problems were reported.

The pounding rain aggravated an ongoing flood situation in Mercer at Plantation Park Campground. High water closed the entrance gate and forced motorists to use an alternate entrance.

Some fields in Mercer County were also under water saturating crops.

In Boardman, the entrance ramp from Interstate 680 to Route 224 flooded overnight.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol had to block off the ramp so crews could pump the water out. The work started about 3:30 a.m. The ramp was still closed as of 6 a.m. Wednesday.

Troopers are also placing high water signs in Salem Township along Route 558 and Lisbon Road. Motorists are urged to avoid the area known as Franklin Square in Salem.

Power outages were reported in Columbiana, Mercer and Lawrence counties. As of 6 a.m. Wednesday 133 customers were still without power in Columbiana County, 148 in Mercer County and 48 in Lawrence County.

More rain is expected Wednesday. Stay ahead of the storm. Click here for interactive radar. If you are viewing on a mobile device, click here for interactive radar.
