YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WYTV) – A new memorial garden is being built at Tod Homestead Cemetery in Youngstown.
The columbarium will be a place for people to place their loved ones’ ashes after cremation.
The memorial facility will include winding paths, flowers and decorative water features. There will be 960 spaces in the 2-acre area.
Project architect Paul J. Ricciuti said the new garden is being designed for changing attitudes towards burial.
“The idea of cremation has been around for a long time, but it hasn’t been accepted by the public very much, but it has become very prominent recently,” said Ricciuti.
Ricciuti said the cost of funeral services and traditional burials have contributed to the increase in cremation.
The columbarium will be finished this fall.
