Stanley gets life without parole in Youngstown murder case

Lavelle Stanley murder trial

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WYTV) – Convicted killer Lavelle Stanley heard harsh words from a Mahoning County judge during his sentencing Thursday.

Stanley, 24, stood silent as Judge Scott Krichbaum handed down the sentence of life in prison without parole for his role in the November 15 shooting death of Elliott Stewart outside the Breeze Car Waxing on Southern Boulevard. Stewart’s brother Derrick was also wounded in the shooting.

An additional 19 years was added to Stanley’s sentence on other charges related to the murder. He was convicted on aggravated murder, attempted murder, felonious assault, and several weapons charges.

Krichbaum called the crime a cold-blooded execution.

“When he shot that gun over and over and over again that is not self-defense, that’s an execution. That is assassination,” said Krichbaum. “The only thing is to make sure you never get out. That you can never prey upon anyone in our society ever again,” said Krichbaum.

After just several hours of deliberation Wednesday the jury reached a verdict.

“This was a case where a good family, not doing anything wrong just kind of protecting their business, running their business, and you have this defendant who is a bad guy coming there and just wreaking havoc on them,” said Mahoning County Assistant Prosecutor Marty Desmond.

Stewart’s cousin Cassandra Leavell said the family is happy with the outcome and believes justice was served.

“Just on behalf of our family we are really grateful. We really appreciate everything that everyone did,” said Leavell. “We are very satisfied with the sentence.”

“My heart goes out to the other family. They are just like us. I just pray for them,” said Maria Crosby, Stewart’s grandmother.

Stanley has 30 days to appeal the sentence.
