Buhl Farm Park golf course facing closure

HERMITAGE, Pa. (WYTV) – it’s one of the only free golf courses in the country, but Buhl Farm Park trustees say they need more money to keep it open.

With Pennsylvania state laws limiting the amount of money they can use from their trust, they need to raise more green to keep theirs growing.

Buhl Farm Park has been around for 100 years, but now the future of its golf course is unclear.

“We have a funding situation,” Park Attorney Tom Kuster said. “In addition the trustees have adopted a prudent spending policy which limits the spending to five percent. So five percent of eight million is roughly four hundred thousand dollars.”

That means the park has to raise the additional $600,000 to meet the million dollar operating budget. Trustees have talked about closing the free golf course since it is hard to make money from the park.”

“You can’t really make a golf course like this pay for it’self,” Buhl Farm Park President Phil Marrie said. “It costs us about $175,000 to operate the golf course and to keep it going.”

Marrie said no one wants to close the golf course, but it is something that may have to happen if they can’t raise enough money to keep it operating.

“It’s very tough to close anything to be truthful, so you know if we can get the community’s support, then we wouldn’t even think of closing the golf course,” Marrie said.

The park has launched a campaign to try to raise money called the “Team of Thousands.”
