Drunk driving crackdown planned for weekend

BOARDMAN, Ohio (WYTV) – The Boardman Police Department will be adding extra patrols this weekend, cracking down on driving violations, including drunk driving, according to a press release.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 179 people died in motor vehicle traffic crashes nationwide over the Fourth of July holiday weekend in 2012. Of those fatalities, nearly half involved at least one driver under the influence of alcohol.

The crackdown on impaired driving is part of the department’s ongoing participation in the national “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” enforcement campaign.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol will also be out in full force cracking down on impaired drivers during the weekend.

The Patrol made 291 OVI arrests from Tuesday, July 3 through Wednesday, July 4 last year. During this time, five fatal crashes resulted in six deaths. One crash was OVI-related, resulting in one death.
