AUSTINTOWN, Ohio (WYTV) – An Austintown man is in jail after a four-hour standoff in the 6900 block of Kirk Road.
The standoff ended early Friday morning with the arrest of John Andrei, 31, who police said brutally beat his 5-year-old adopted son.
There was a frantic 911 call from a family member.
“The mother and my wife, they took the baby to St. E’s hospital,” the caller said. “Get this guy that beat the [expletive] out of my grandson two hours ago. You ought to see his body.”
Austintown police went to the hospital and events escalated quickly after that.
“We decided we are going to make an arrest for felonious assault and domestic violence. We went to his house to make the arrest, surrounded the house and one of the officers noticed he had a knife on him,” said Austintown police Lt. Mark Skowron.
The man at the center of the investigation, John Andrei, has an extensive criminal history in Mahoning County, including arrests for domestic violence, disorderly conduct and drunken driving.
Police also saw an empty rifle case and knew there were two women in the house with Andrei. The Crisis Response Team and negotiators were called in to help.
After four hours of negotiations, Andrei came out of the house and surrendered. He faces charges of felonious assault, domestic violence and inducing panic.
“We like to see them all resolved peacefully like that. No matter what emotion or anything comes up, we still like to see it when they are peacefully resolved,” Skowron said.
Police said the child is expected to make a full recovery.
A second man was arrested in connection to Thursday night’s events. Police said a neighbor tried to interfere with the negotiations and faces charges of obstruction and resisting arrest.
