YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WYTV) – The strong winds from Tuesday afternoon’s storms caused a huge mess for drivers northbound along interstate 680 near Route 193.
The driver of a tractor trailer said he was driving along when the winds picked up just before 3 p.m. All of a sudden, the next thing he knows he hit the wall. Witnesses said police they saw the winds pick up the front of the tractor trailer.
“It was pouring down rain real bad, raining real hard. But I was going slow around the bend. I don’t know if it lifted me up or what,” truck driver Reginald Harris said.
The northbound lanes were down to one lane for about an hour. The accident backed up traffic on Interstate 680 for miles while crews cleaned up the mess.
On Glenwood Avenue on the south side of Youngstown, the storms knocked down a tree across the roadway and knocked out power lines to neighboring homes. Firefighters said it was fortunate no one was driving by when the tree fell.
“I heard a loud thud. I went out to look out the window and the tree was laying across the street,” Symone McKinney said.
McKinney’s home lost power because of the tree. She said there was no rain, but a lot of wind at the time.
Firefighters were directing traffic until road and power crews arrived to clean up the mess.
