Gathering space considered for downtown project

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WYTV) – Members of the city’s Design Review Committee are considering preliminary plans for a new patio-style plaza along Federal Street where the old Paramount Theater once stood.

The building was demolished recently to make way for additional parking space, but planners also wanted to do something a little different with the area.

Deputy Director of Public Works Chuck Sasho said with some landscaping, some of the space could be utilized as a sitting area.

“We are looking at adding some character to it and incorporate some areas where the public can sit down and have a cup of coffee or read the paper,” Sasho said.

Sasho said officials will look to see if some of the old theater’s Terra Cotta facade can be used in the new design. Committee members are expected to give final approval to the $20,000 project when they meet next month.

Construction should be finished later this summer.
