Year in Review: The Mustangs began 2013 with a 2-0 record by defeating one-win Newbury (40-6) and winless East Palestine (35-27). Mathews was brilliant on the road by posting a 4-1 mark; however, at home they were just 1-4. In weeks eight and nine, the Mustangs dropped back-to-back home contests to Southington (30-27) and to Grand Valley (22-20) by a combined five points.

Following coach Mike Palumbo’s second season in Vienna, the Mustangs saw an increase in victories go from 1 in 2012 to 5 in 2013. Also, on October 4,Mathews saw their 9-game league losing streak come to an end when they knocked off the homestanding Redskins of Ledgemont 33-7.

This season, Mathews will begin play on Friday, August 29 against Ashtabula Saints John and Paul at home.

3 Things to Watch in Vienna
Departure of Wyatt.
Wyatt Ford has been a consistent force for the Mustangs on offense and on defense. He led the team in tackles the past two seasons compiling 212 defensive stops during that time frame. He caught passes for 515 yards in 2013 and scored 5 total touchdowns. He has since graduated and there will be a major need to fill the hole which he has left in Mathews.

Improvement in offense and defense.
Last year, the scoring production went up by 11 points (26 points per game in 2013 compared to 15 in 2012). Also, the defense permitted 16 points less per game last year than in the prior season.

History Lesson.
Mathews has won just eight games over the past three seasons (8-22). Did you know that the Mustangs had only suffered through one losing campaign (2009: 0-10) in their previous six years?

The win marked the Mustangs’ first in their initial contest of the year since 2007…Mathews has lost ten of their last eleven match ups in October…The Mustangs have compiled just a 1-7 mark at home in their last eight contests. However, Mathews was able to win four of their five road matchups in 2013. They lost their previous five away from Vienna.
