Niles cracking down on unpaid utility bills

NILES, Ohio (WYTV) – Niles residents with delinquent utility bills should prepare to get shut off.

City officials said hundreds of thousands of dollars is past due because of uncollected utility bills. Officials said they are preparing a list of those who are long past due and will do an aggressive week of turning off customers on that list.

Niles Mayor Ralph Infante said unpaid utilities is one of the reasons for the city’s financial problems.

“That’s a little bit part of it, but there is a long history of delinquencies, especially now since the economy went bad. People are having hard times and we work with people, especially the elderly and people that cannot afford it,” Infante said.

In other news, City Council  has re-instated a 1.5 percent income tax credit for Niles residents who work in another municipality.
