YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Eating healthy means lots of fruits and vegetables, but many people do not have the skills to select and prepare produce in their home.

For the rest of this week, free cooking classes are being held at First Unitarian Universalist Church on Elm Street in Youngstown. The program is being sponsored by Grow Youngstown, which sponsors the north side farmer’s market and the community-supported agriculture initiative.

Their goal is to bring healthier food to city residents.

“Members buy local produce because they want to cook more vegetables and they want to be healthier. Everyone has such fast, busy lives. We’re eating out a lot. So when they have that opportunity to have all that fresh produce at home, suddenly it’s like ‘oh my gosh, what am I supposed to do with this?’,” Elsa Higby of Grow Youngstown said.

Students in the free class learn basic cooking and food preservation techniques.
