Dozens turn out to make community garden new again

YOUNGSTOWN (WYTV) — Days after a Inner City garden was vandalized — dozens came out to replant all of the trees destroyed.

Driving down this residential street in the south side of Youngstown, you can clearly see volunteers donating their time to clean up the mess left behind by an unknown vandal.

Like a thief in the night — the criminal came in and cut down more than two dozen trees worth hundreds of dollars on Hillman Street.

“They were cut about this much of them were sticking out of the ground,” said Joe Hille, a volunteer for the organization.

A crime puzzling law enforcement and volunteers.

“I was in awe,I don’t understand why anybody would do that? Maybe just jealousy,” said Hille.

Now volunteers dig…and pull their weight to replant the vandalized property.

“Everybody gathered together as one to fix and bring this community back together with what one man tried to destroy,” said Mason Carratt, an organizer.

Mason Carratt organized Saturday’s event.

With the sweat and hard work of everyone at the Inner City garden, new trees went back in the ground one by one…

This group’s effort is sending a message loud and clear.

“This project is too important for our community to let one persons violent actions determine what goes on here,” said Susie Beiersdorfer.

Although the vandal hasn’t been caught, organizers have already forgiven.

“We do love you and we forgive you,” said Carratt.

Cameras and a fence will be installed on the property to keep vandals from destroying the newest trees.

After the trees are mature enough — they will provide fruit for people living in that neighborhood…

Also, if you want to help you can donate to any Huntington Bank — to the Inner City Garden.
