YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WYTV) – A couple dozen grade-school students spent the past week getting a glimpse of what it might be like working as the next generation of engineers, designers and manufacturers.

Organizers of the second annual “Summer Manufacturing Institute,” sponsored by the Oh Wow! Children’s Center for Science and Technology, held a showcase breakfast Friday morning at the YWCA in downtown Youngstown. The week-long summer camp helped introduce the students to the manufacturing process, from the initial design stage through budgets and even marketing a final product.

“Kids worked on their own budget, using the $10,000 spending limit they had. They had to purchase all their materials, they had to come up with a design using those materials that would be functional,” Audra Carlson of the Oh Wow! museum said.

As part of the program, the kids even designed and built their own toy cars using odds and ends, like water bottles and cardboard, as well as signs to advertise their products.
