JACKSON CENTER, Pa. (WYTV) – Police arrested a man in Jackson Center Wednesday after he got drunk and shot another man through the wrist, sending a stray bullet in the direction of a room where a baby was sleeping, according to a criminal complaint.
Authorities believe Matthew Sines, 22, shot Jacob Boughner at an apartment at 1203 Franklin Road, sending a bullet toward the room where Sines’ 1-year-old child was sleeping. Two females, ages 17 and 22, also were in the apartment at the time. The older female is believed to be Sines’ fiance and the mother of his child, according to police.
After a night of drinking with each other, Sines became heavily intoxicated and told Boughner he, “wanted to kill something and no one will stop him,” according to the criminal complaint.
The document says that Sines went on to say, “I am a psychopath.” A few seconds later, Boughner heard the 9-millimeter gun getting cocked and felt a sharp pain in his right wrist after Sines shot him around 1 a.m.
Sines continued to fire off rounds from the gun. Downstairs neighbors heard the shooting, and at least one of them ran upstairs to grab Sines’ child, according to Pennsylvania State Police.
“We walked upstairs to check on her and she told us to check the bedroom. We checked the bedroom, we found Matt in the bedroom and he had a gun. So I went to the baby’s room and grabbed the baby. He grabbed Kayla and we went downstairs and as we were walking down stairs, we heard six more gunshots,” neighbor Levi Martin said.
By that time Pennsylvania State Police were on the scene and called in a SWAT team that surrounded the house and started evacuating neighbors to a nearby church. At some point, detectives believe Sines either fell asleep or passed out, woke up around 7:30 a.m. and came outside to go to work, where he ran into the heavily armed officers.
Sines faces charges of attempted homicide, aggravated assault, assault, endangering children, four counts of recklessly endangering another person and harassment.
A judge set Sines’ bond at $250,000 and ordered a mental evaluation. He is due back in court in about three weeks.
