Mathews Road roundabout nearly done

BOARDMAN, Ohio (WYTV) – Construction on Mahoning County’s first roundabout is almost full circle.

Wednesday afternoon, crews were pouring concrete for the sidewalks at the intersection of Mathews Road and Sheridan Road. Mahoning County Engineer Patrick Ginnetti said the goal is to have the project done before school starts.

That is good news for the homeowners who live in the construction zone.

Pat Johnston, who lives right in the middle of the project, said she has grown accustomed to the sounds of the construction.

“When they are grinding up stones, breaking up concrete, it is quite noisy,” she said.

For the most part, she is OK with the project.

“My only problem so far, and it is not their fault, is I can’t use my driveway until the road is in, so I have to park three houses down,” Pat Johnston said. “I don’t get too upset about that except on the days I have to buy groceries. I have to haul them back in a little cart.”

Neighbor John Witherow expressed similar frustrations.

“Last night, I come home and the neighbor’s car was parked out here in front of the devil strip and I couldn’t even back into my driveway or pull into my driveway,” Witherow said.

He said he does not think the new traffic pattern will solve anything.

“I think it is going to cause more problems, truthfully,” Witherow said.

Johnston said she has reservations too.

“I am just leary of it. I have never driven around one and I just plain don’t know,” she said.

Ginnetti said he is aware of the concerns.

“I am in the process of getting a video put together to put out to the public so they can watch and see how you are supposed to yield through the roundabout,” Ginnetti said.

Islands will steer drivers in right direction. A car in the roundabout has the right of way.
