CANFIELD, Ohio (WYTV) – Police arrested a Canfield man and woman Wednesday morning after an investigation led them to believe that they conspired to steal two earrings and a car from an elderly woman.
Police arrested Evan Mikulka, 29, and Sonnie Mikulka, 32, charging each with theft, receiving stolen property and unauthorized use of a vehicle, all felonies.
The nephew of an 85-year-old Canfield woman originally called police, concerned that the pair was taking advantage of her aunt. The woman who police identified as a victim said that Evan and Sonnie approached her Friday afternoon. After some conversation, she invited them into her house. According to her testimony in the police report, the couple looked around the house, and when she told Evan that Sonnie was taking too long to look around the basement, at which point the couple left the house.
Sunday, the woman saw Sonnie and Evan walking in the rain and offered to let them use her car. When they did not return the car by Monday morning, the woman’s niece contacted Austintown Police, who told her that the car had been impounded.
The woman recovered her car, and police later found that Evan had pawned two earrings, which the woman believed to be hers, at a local cash-for-gold store.
When police went to arrest the couple, they found a shoe box full of syringes and some burnt spoons inside their apartment. The couple had a four-month old boy with them at the apartment at the time of arrest as well.
A message left at the number listed for Sonnie on the police report was not immediately returned.
