Jail deal could prevent privatization

Mercer County Jail

MERCER, Pa. (WYTV) – After more than a year and a half of working without a new contract, corrections officers at the Mercer County Jail are very close to a new labor agreement.

A verbal agreement has been reached between commissioners and leaders with the Teamsters Local 250 on a three-year contract.

As part of the negotiations, commissioners will not pursue efforts to bring in a private company to run the jail during the lifetime of the agreement.

Commissioners had been talking about privatization as a way of cutting down the jail’s $8 million dollar budget.

A ratification vote by the workers is expected next week.
