Funeral set for former Youngstown mayor


YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WYTV) – Funeral services have been scheduled for former Youngstown Mayor George Vukovich who died Monday.

Vukovich was born on September 8, 1926 in Youngstown. He attended Woodrow Wilson High School and Youngstown State University and is a veteran of the United States Army.

He worked at Republic Steel before embarking on his political career, holding elected offices in the city of Youngstown for a span of 20 years including being the Mayor of Youngstown from 1980 to 1984. Vukovich was also was Seventh Ward Councilman and Clerk of Youngstown Municipal Court.  He was 87 years old.

Calling Hours are scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 3 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Kubina-Yuhasz Funeral Home, 5925 Market St., Boardman. Calling hours will also be held at 9 a.m. Monday, Aug. 4 at St. Angela Merici (formerly Sacred Heart Church), 400 Lincoln Park Dr., Youngstown. A funeral service will follow at 10 a.m.
