GREENFORD, Ohio (WYTV) – The Big Reach Center of Hope at Greenford Christian Church is holding its annual school supply giveaway on Saturday.
The school supply giveaway was the very first event that kicked off the Big Reach ministry in 2004, according to Lisa Wallace. She said that first event helped approximately 200 children.
The number of children helped by the school supply giveaway has fluctuated over the years and this year, it will serve 300 students. Each child will receive a book bag filled with school supplies, a bag of snacks, and a new school outfit that includes underwear, socks, shoes, pants and shirt.
Wallace said a trend that has developed over the past few years has been families camping out at the church overnight and tailgating before the Saturday morning giveaway. She said it is not necessary for families to do so because the families are pre-registered for the supplies, but Wallace said it has become a tradition of sorts.
Wallace said an organization in the Greenford area called “Not Just Smoke” cooks a free BBQ dinner for all the families in attendance.
She said the event requires pre-registration, so families cannot just show up to receive supplies, but registration for next year begins in April.
Wallace said the school supply giveaway is the largest event held by the Big Reach Center of Hope.
