GIRARD, Ohio (WYTV) — Saturday’s heavy rains caused major headaches for some homeowners in Girard.
However, some were dealing with more than just flooded basements. One family on Gary Avenue is cleaning up raw sewage that flowed into their home.
Bill Kenneally and his wife Gina are spending their Sunday watching restoration crews clean up a stinky mess. Saturday’s rains were so heavy that sewage flowed into their once-finished basement.
“Raw sewage in the house,” explained Kenneally. “It’s just that the sewers here on this street are absolutely terrible, I mean everything there was so much pressure that my back flow valve was opened up and seweage spewed into the house.”
Cleaning up waste wasn’t easy.
“It involves a lot as far as extracting carpet, removing carpet base board, tag strip, i mean we go through the whole nine yards for it,” said Kenneally.
Kenneally and his wife aren’t the only ones expriencing this headache. He said that it happens up and down Gary Avenue every time there’s a heavy rain. He also said the city has known for years that there’s a problem on this street.
“It’s very frustrating, I don’t know what to call it there’s been some kind of efforts made to investigate it but nothing has corrected this street in particular, I mean it’s pretty bad,” said Kenneally.
Their insurance will pay for the clean-up. Kenneally suggested that other homeowners make sure wastewater back-up is covered on their policy, otherwise it could leave them in a smelly situation.
