Future of Austintown arson house unclear

AUSTINTOWN, Ohio (WYTV) – A home in Austintown where nearly a dozen dogs were removed by humane agents last week only a few days after police said it was set on fire was on the list for the Mahoning County Sheriff sale on Tuesday.

The home at 160 S. Navarre Ave. still has yellow police tape around it. The house was badly damaged in what police are calling an act of arson by the resident’s ex-boyfriend.

No one bid on the property, so it is unclear what will happen next. Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office Secretary Mary Guzzo said she was surprised to see this property up for auction on Tuesday because of what happened last week.

“Just because I figured that they knew about that they would be going and doing an investigation on it. We never know if they are going to recall them or not,” Guzzo said.

The South Navarre house has been advertised as being part of the sale for the past three weeks. That means two weeks before it caught fire, the home was already advertised that it was up for bid, but the process started weeks before that.

Guzzo said it is a long process to get a house to sheriff sale.

The badly burned home was one of 60 properties on the sheriff sale auction block.

“Most of these are foreclosed properties, there are some that are tax liens that the treasurer will take to sale,” Guzzo said.

She said the Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office already is booking sales into October and the next one is set for Aug. 19.
