Help Hotline kicks off recovery program

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) –  Help Hotline Crisis Center kicked off its 10-week class on Monday aimed at helping people with mental health and substance abuse issues.

It is called BRIDGES, which stands for Building Recovery of Individual Dreams and Goals through Education and Support. Classes help participants know how to deal with their symptoms.

The program has been going on for 10 years. Course leaders said notes from people who previously completed the program are encouraging.

“A lot of times they have actually said that they have gained self confidence through knowing that they are not alone. Those of us who teach the class also have a mental health diagnosis. I have bipolar disorder and I am not ashamed to talk about it. I want people to know about it so it helps with the stigma,” Nancy Montagna of Help Hotline said.

Every week there is a new topic and Monday’s was getting to know each other. The BRIDGES program starts in Warren on Tuesday.
