N. Falls income tax issue heads to ballot

NEWTON FALLS, Ohio (WYTV) – Voters in Newton Falls will decide in November if they want to retain an income tax “forgiveness” measure.

In June, Village Council passed an ordinance reinstating a 1 percent income tax. Previously, those who paid taxes to other municipalities did not have to pay income tax to Newton Falls.

Council members said the tax is needed to bridge a continuing budget shortfall that has led to the layoff of 20 percent of the village’s workforce since 2005.

However, residents did not agree with the decision and gathered the needed 300 signatures to take the issue to a vote. The Trumbull County Board of Elections certified the petitions Wednesday.
