Sweet corn season is here in the valley

Sweet corn season in the Valley

POLAND, Ohio (WYTV) — Move over strawberries and blueberries– it’s sweet corn season.

Farmers say this year’s crop is one of the sweetest in years.

WYTV reporter Julie Bercik spent the day at two Mahoning County Farms and tells us why August is the BEST time to buy sweet corn.

Bag it and sell it– sweet corn at Molnar Farms in Poland is the go to summer vegetable.

“Sweet corn you can do multiple things with it. I want to eat of course to enjoy it but then i also want to freeze some to enjoy for the winter months,” said Tami Mazzella, of Warren.

“Everyone loves the sweet corn. We have a great crop this year,” said Rick Molnar, of Molnar Farms.

A soggy summer is a big reason behind this year’s bountiful crop.

“We’ve had lots of water so we don’t have to irrigate. The corn has grown really nice and big this year which is fabulous and it’s not too hot so we don’t have a lot of planting coming on top of each other so we can stretch the season out,” said Debbie Pifer, of White House Fruit Farm.

Molnar has 25 acres of sweet corn.

“We plant sweet corn every seven to ten days so we have a consistent crop throughout the year. You can’t pick off it continuously. You have one crop we pick off for about a week, then we move on to another one,” said Rick Molnar.

White House fruit Farm hopes to harvest sweet corn through October. The farm says August is the sweetest time to buy!

August has the biggest ears because it’s the longest days, and so if you’re looking to can corn or to freeze corn or just for your party, now is the time.
