Niles, OH (WYTV)- After seven straight games that saw the Mahoning Valley Scrappers’ offense struggle to put hits on the scoreboard let alone runs, the offense came alive in a big way on Saturday night. The Scrappers collected 12 hits on their way to an 11-6 win over the Staten Island Yankees.
The Scrappers would score first with single runs in the 2nd and 3rd innings. Francisco Mejia double to start the 2nd inning and moved to third base on a fly out. Taylor Murphy would deliver an RBI single to put Mahoning Valley up 1-0. In the 3rd inning it would be Yonathan Mendoza starting the inning with a single. After stealing second and moving to third on a ground out, Mendoza would score on Steven Patterson’s sac fly for a 2-0 lead.
Staten Island would take their only lead of the night in the top of the 4th inning. With 1 out, Chris Breen would walk and Connor Spencer would single. Nathan Mikolas would then triple to center to score both runners. Mikolas would also score on a fielder’s choice from Renzo Martini for a 3-2 lead.
Mahoning Valley wasted little time regaining the lead for good. In the bottom of the 4th inning the Scrappers would send all 9 men to the plate while scoring 3 runs. Ordomar Valdez and Greg Allen would each pick up RBI’s with singles.
The game would get put out of reach in the bottom of the 6th inning. The Scrappers would score a total of four runs while sending ten men to the plate. The Yankees helped out by committing 3 errors in the inning and also walking a batter. The Scrappers got one RBI in the inning on Leo Castillo’s sac fly. By the time the inning ended, the Scrappers held a 9-4 lead.
The Scrappers would add insurance runs in the 7th and 8th innings. Allen, who started the 7th inning by being hit by a pitch, scored on Castillo’s RBI single. Castillo would also drive in the lone run of the 8th inning when he drew a bases loaded walk to score Mendoza for the final score of 11-6.
Juan Santana started for the Scrappers and went 4 innings. He allowed 3 runs, all earned, on 5 hits. Santana walked 3 and struck out 3. Justin Garcia (3-1) would follow and worked 4 innings. Garcia allowed 3 runs, 2 earned, on 4 hits. He also struck out 4 and walked 2 while earning the win. JP Feyereisen would work a perfect 9th inning to end the game.
The Scrappers and Yankees will continue their series on Sunday at 5:05.
