Ice House Inn celebrates 80 years of business

AUSTINTOWN, Ohio (WYTV) — A long-time Austintown landmark is celebrating eight decades in business; run by the same family for all of those years.

The Ice House Inn is still owned and operated by Michael Mousie and his family. Mousie’s grandfather moved to Austintown in 1927, and started selling ice out of his house.

After prohibition ended, Mousie said his family got the second liquor license in Youngstown in 1934. 80 years later, he claims it’s still the oldest, single family-owned liquor license in the state of Ohio.

They have the memories to back up the claims.

“When I was a kid, we didn’t have nintendo, computers, our entertainment was hanging out and meeting all these people, so I met a lot of people in my life in the bar, and I’m still friends with a lot of them, they still come in, their family come in,” said Mousie.

“Really, it’s like a neighborhood bar. I mean you talk about “Cheers,” no, talk about the Ice House!” added George Klein, an Ice House customer of 65 years.

The Ice House moved from Mahoning Avenue to its current location off Route 46 in 1992. Mousie said his grandfather turned the sign upside down in the 60′s to attract attention.

There are food and drink specials all week to mark the 80th anniversary.
