Girard officer resigned amid internal investigation

Girard officer resigns

GIRARD, Ohio (WYTV) – A Girard police officer who resigned Tuesday was the subject of an internal investigation stemming from a call he responded to on Aug. 1.

According to a police report, Girard Officer Larry Neely came to a Rite Aid pharmacy on North State Street in Girard Aug. 1 to take a report of a female sick in her car.

The woman told Neely she was in rehab, had slipped up and did not want to go to jail, according to the report.

Neely asked her to step out of the vehicle and placed her in custody in his cruiser. The report states that he found five syringes, a spoon with possible drug residue and a lighter in the woman’s car.

The woman signed paperwork saying she did not want medical attention, and Neely informed her that she would be receiving charges in the mail before letting her go.

Girard Police Chief Jeff Palmer said Neely may not have followed proper police procedure during the call. Chief Palmer could not say what issues they were specifically looking at because the incident is still under investigation.

Girard Police did not give an official reason for Neely’s resignation.

Neely resigned Tuesday, citing personal reasons.

In March, Neely was given a 20-day unpaid suspension after an investigation revealed Neely knew about underage drinking parties his stepson was hosting at Neely’s house.

Neely did not face criminal charges in connection with the investigation into the underage drinking parties.
