WARREN, Ohio (WYTV) – According to the nurse’s union at ValleyCare Trumbull Memorial Hospital, 47 LPNs will be laid off beginning Friday.
Leaders with SEIU District 1199, which represents the LPNs as well as over 200 other workers at the hospital, said the move is a direct violation of the collective bargaining agreement currently in place until 2016.
Union representatives said they have filed a grievance against the hospital for the alleged contract violation. They have also filed federal unfair labor charges against Valley Care with the National Labor Relations Board.
ValleyCare issued a statement Tuesday saying they initiated discussions with the union in May to transition to staffing only registered nurses and nursing assistants.
“Today, we are beginning to meet with and provide information to our LPNs and the S.E.I.U. with additional information regarding the implementation of this nursing care plan in which registered nurses will be the primary provider of patient care at the bedside,” hospital officials said in the prepared statement.
ValleyCare put the number of LPNs impacted at 34 in contrast to 47 reported by union officials.
