September, 26, 2008 – Girard 28 Niles 21 (2 OT)
The Indians’ Kyle Stadelmyer ran for over 100-yards and scored twice to go along with an interception. However, Stadelmyer left the game with an injury. In both of the overtime sessions, Dan Graziano tossed a touchdown (to Tallen Birmingham and to Michael Floravit) to lead Girard past Niles.
Pat Pearson will make his debut as the head coach of the Girard Indians. He will become the sixth head coach of the Indians in the past 29 years. Of those head coaches, only two have had winning campaigns in their initial season. Nick Cochran was 6-4 in 2010 and Joe Jeswald was 8-2 in 1989…Girard has lost three of their last four season openers.
Niles’ Brian Shaner has amassed 13 wins in his first two years at the helm of the Red Dragons. The last coach to accomplish this feat in his first two seasons at Niles was Dave Pappada (13 wins in 1985-86).
