YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WYTV) – D.J. Moore caught a 34-yard touchdown pass, and finished with four TD receptions on the day, as IMHOTP edged Cardinal Mooney 31-27 in the season opener at Stambaugh Stadium.
Mooney took control of the game in the first quarter, taking a 14-0 lead. Quarterback Jon Saadey connected with Chris Mitchell on a 53-yard touchdown pass to open the scoring. On the day, Saadey completed 6-17 passes for 133 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed for 63 yards in the loss. Mitchell caught 7 passes for 106 yards.
The Cardinals added a defensive score later in the first. Kameron Stringer recovered a muffed snap in the endzone to increase the Cardinals’ lead to 14-0.
Moore got the Panthers on the board with two minutes to play in the first quarter, hauling in a 55-yard touchdown pass. Following a Zak Kennedy field-goal, IMHOTEP’s Tyliek Raynor later raced in for a 76-yard touchdown. He finished with 133 yards on the ground.
IMHOTEP took a 25-17 lead into the half.
Late in the third quarter, C.J. Amill came up with a key interception deep in Panthers’ territory, setting up a 4-yard scoring scamper by Tailback Anthony Gill. Gill tallied 42 rushing yards on the day.
IMHOTEP answered back back in the fourth quarter, when Moore hauled in a 34-yard touchdown pass that proved to be the evantual game-winner. Moore, a Maryland commit, finished with 7 catches for 199 yards on the day. Adre Dreiutt-Parks completed 13-18 passes for 255 with 4 touchdowns and an interception.
Mooney (0-1) will host Boardman in week two.
