BOARDMAN, Ohio (WKBN) — Dr. Shayesteh discusses how a sedentary lifestyle can greatly increase the chances for a number of serious diseases.
The likelihood of getting heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, and colon and endometrial cancers multiplies with decreased activity.
“Research shows that people that have the most sitting time have 24 percent higher risk of developing colon cancer, compared to [those who] have less sitting time,” said Shayesteh. “If that sitting time happens in front of the TV, because they do a lot of unhealthy snacking, that risk increases to 54 percent.”
The jump in risk occurs because high levels of insulin, sugar and estrogen are all factors that contribute to these diseases, and when we eat a lot but are not active, these levels can spike.
Of course some jobs do not allow for a lot of activity, and for those who have these kinds of occupations, Dr. Shayesteh recommends taking advantage of any excuse to leave the desk. For anyone who works a “secretarial job, [or a] computer job, they should take any opportunity. Even walking 5 minutes around is still better than continuous sitting,” Shayesteh said.
He recommends standing or walking around on lunch breaks and phone calls while at work, though admits that any kind of “workplace activity” can be helpful. Dr. Shayesteh encourages developing smart lifestyle and nutritional habits, as even small changes can make a significant difference.
