AUSTINTOWN, Ohio (WYTV) – An Austintown Middle School student was arrested and taken off of a special needs school bus after police say he sexually assaulted a 6-year-old student.
The Austintown superintendent said both students are special needs students and the incident occurred while they were being transported to a school for special needs students.
According to police reports, a 14-year-old male student and 6-year-old male student were sitting together towards the front of the bus Thursday morning when an aide observed the 14-year-old bend over in his seat. When the aide went to investigate, she said she saw that the teen suspect had exposed the child’s penis by pulling open the elastic band on his shorts.
The aide sat between the two boys and did not confront the teen for fear of a violent reaction, according to the report. The bus returned to Austintown Middle School, where the aide and bus driver notified authorities. The boys were taken off the bus and questioned by counselors, the principal and police.
The victim stated that he was fearful of the teen. The suspect denied all the allegations when questioned by police.
Austintown Superintendent Vince Colaluca said the only students on the bus were students that attend the special needs school.
The parents of the teen said that the suspect suffers from several conditions and is taking medication. They also said the suspect was a victim of sexual abuse.
Foster parents of the 6-year-old boy were called to the school and told police the child is under jurisdiction of the Ashtabula County Children Services Board and that he had also been sexually abused in the past.
The suspect was charged with sexual imposition and is in the Mahoning County Juvenile Detention Center.
