YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WYTV) – General Motors urged customers who own vehicles with faulty ignition switches to get them repaired as soon as possible, but delays in parts may prevent that from happening.
33 WYTV First News checked with two local dealerships that have been working nonstop to fill orders for repairs. Sweeney Chevrolet in Youngstown said it has been doing repair work on Cobalts and HHRs for a few months and Diane Saur Chevrolet in Warren has received parts for repairs on Cobalts and Pontiac G5s. Parts for the Impala have not come in.
GM suppliers have been putting together the ignition repair kits three shifts per day, seven days a week since April, and GM dealers have completed more than a third of all repairs to date. GM says it has shipped nearly one-and-a-half million repair kits.
Even if parts are delayed, GM dealers urge customers to wait and get their vehicle repaired by a certified dealer and mechanic.
Owner Sandra Warren said recalls in general are a hassle but admits they are necessary. She doesn’t mind waiting for the expertise.
““You want your car to be safe, and you also want to know the manufacturer stands behind their product so if there is a problem, you want it fixed,” Warren said.
GM officials say once a notice is received, the owner needs to call the dealership so they can order the part. The service department will then call the customer when the part is in and the repair can be made.
