Niles overnight parking ban met with mixed reactions

Overnight parking ban in Niles

NILES, Ohio (WYTV) – During the day, cars are free to park on the streets of Niles but to leave a car sit overnight is now illegal.

Councilman At Large Reggie Giancola said they drafted the law after a May 31 check found approximately 266 out of place vehicles on the street.

“We verified where every car was parked and to see if there was room in the driveways two or three houses up and down on both sides of the street and all of them there was room in every driveway,” Giancola said.

City leaders said they are worried about emergency vehicles being able to get down certain streets with parked cars on them. They also think the law will help to deter crime.

“People are able to come in to the town, hide their cars amongst all the other cars that are parked on the streets and work their way into neighborhoods,” said Officer Shawn Crank. “If no other cars are parked on the street at night, it makes our job a lot easier to pick out those who don’t belong in the neighborhood.”

Crank warns that parking in the devils strip or on lawns is illegal at any time and will be cited. If a home does not have a driveway or if the number of vehicles registered to the house will not fit, parking permits are available. Temporary permits are also an option.

Residents Adam Reifinger and Jamie Rounds are split on how they fill about the new parking law. Reifinger said he thinks it will help. Rounds said it is a drastic solution to a small problem.

“In a way it is going to be very beneficial because there is a lot of over use of parking on the streets, especially in certain neighborhoods,” Reifinger said.

“I think it is stupid. You just park on the street. It is not really a problem,” said Jamie Rounds, Niles resident.

Warnings will be issued until October 14.
