South Avenue accident causes power outage in Youngstown

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WYTV) – A car that crashed into a utility pole on Youngstown’s south side caused a power outage and shut down South Avenue between Philadelphia Avenue and Boston Avenue on Thursday.

The accident happened about 4:30 a.m. Thursday on South Avenue near Philadelphia Avenue and brought down a utility pole and power lines. The road was reopened Thursday evening.

Police identified the driver as James Torres, 24, of Detroit Avenue in Youngstown. Emergency workers took Torres to St. Elizabeth Health Center, but his condition is unknown.

According to Ohio Edison’s website, between 21 and 100 homes in the area were without electrical power and the lines were expected to be fixed by 3 p.m. Thursday.

Police said Torres, who received a citation for driving with a suspended license, was driving south on South Avenue, ran off the road and struck the utility pole.
