Man jailed in dumbbell assault

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WYTV) – A Youngstown man remains at the Mahoning County Jail after police said he assaulted his live-in girlfriend over the weekend.

Harold Burton Saunders Jr., 60, 606 W. Warren Ave., was arraigned Monday on a charge of felonious assault and his bond was set at $50,000. He is due back in court on Sept. 29.

According to a Youngstown police report, officers were called to the house about 1:30 a.m. Saturday for a fight involving weapons. When they arrived, they found a woman bleeding profusely from her head.

The woman told police she and Saunders, who is her live-in fiance, were arguing when Saunders grabbed her by the shirt and began punching her in the face and torso, the report states. She told police she was able to fight him off and then he began throwing her personal belongings down the steps.

The woman said Saunders then began punching her again and struck her in the head with a 20-pound weight, according to the report. She told police Saunders threatened to kill her before fleeing the house.

Officers noted in their report that the woman was bleeding from a large gash on her head, had a swollen left eye and was complaining of pain in her left side. They took pictures of her injuries and the bloody dumbbell, the report states.

The woman said she wanted to pursue charges, but was unable to fill out the domestic violence form because of her head injury. Officers completed the form for her and she signed it.

While officers were still at the house, Saunders returned and was arrested on the felonious assault charge. The woman was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center for treatment.
