FAIRVIEW TOWNSHIP, Pa. (WYTV) – Police in Mercer County are investigating a burglary at American Legion Post 919 in Fredonia.

According to a Pennsylvania State Police report, two men broke into the post at 165 Kelso Road just after 1 a.m. Tuesday and took merchandise, cash, and supplies. Damage also was sustained to the building and a jukebox inside. The total loss is about $7,500, which includes about $6,000 in needed repairs.

Surveillance video shows the two men breaking a window to a side door and then entering the building.

Several of the items taken include a 46-inch television, cases of beer, $60 in cash, a copier and a Japanese WWII rifle that was donated to the post.

“A Japanese rifle. It was an artifact. They stole it and it is gone,” said Post Commander Tom Shearer.

Shearer said he discovered the break-in about 8 a.m. Tuesday when he and the finance officer were there to install a new front door.

“Open the door and walk in. It looked like there might have been a fight. Then we looked around and seen all the stuff laying on the floor and that is when we started checking,” Shearer said.

A jukebox also was damaged by the thieves when they took the money from it.

Shearer said the post installed cameras after a break-in five years ago. Unfortunately, the video won’t help identify the suspects because their faces were covered.

“It’s pretty disrespectful going after a veterans club,” Shearer said.

No suspects have been arrested.
