City takes steps to repair phone outages

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WYTV) – The city of Youngstown is taking action on its aging phone system.

Outages affected City Hall and the police department on Monday and again on Thursday.

The Board of Control approved a contract to buy four special battery backups to prevent the system from crashing when the power goes out. The $1,200 batteries should be delivered within the next several days.

“We just have a lot of things that are sort of coming together all at once,” said Youngstown Mayor John McNally. “These intermittent interruptions are frustrating to the citizens and folks that are trying to call in to City Hall.”

For the time being, the batteries are a temporary fix. A generator project to solve the inadequate electricity problem at City Hall should be installed by Jan. 1.

The city’s 911 system was not affected during the recent outages because it runs on a different system.
