Neighbor recalls memories of Dempsey

WARREN, Ohio (WYTV) — Off ff of state Route 88 in Trumbull County, Carol Reed is mourning the loss of a friend and neighbor.

25-year-old Cody Dempsey was shot to death Friday by officers after a police chase on state Route 11 near Warren.

“It was like shock for me. It’s like being outside of your body hearing all of this stuff, you can’t believe that’s going on,” Reed said.

A call came in around 11 a.m. Friday on a 1983 Cadillac Eldorado that was reported stolen from a Kinsman Auto yard. After police spotted the car, Dempsey led them on a chase. Spikes were used to stop the car. Witnesses say that’s when they saw Dempsey shoot at police.Officers returned fire, killing him.

“I don’t want to start crying. I have a son of my own, and I can’t picture anybody going through this,” said Reed. “So close to home and you know the people and it is harder when you know them.”

Reed says she’s known Dempsey since his family moved in next door.

“This just doesn’t sound like him at all. This isn’t the person I knew, the sweet boy I knew,” said Reed.
