Former Congressman Jim Traficant died Saturday at the age of 73.

Traficant served in the United States House of Representatives for 17 years, from 1984 to 2001, representing the Mahoning Valley.

The Democrat gained notoriety for refusing to evict laid-off steelworkers from their homes while working as Mahoning County Sheriff in 1980.

Traficant suffered severe injuries in an accident on his Greenford, Ohio farm Tuesday evening. A tractor pinned Traficant to the ground, and emergency workers lifted the vehicle off of him upon arriving at the scene.
