GIRARD, Ohio (WYTV) – Five local women were crowned national 8-ball pool champions last month at a tournament in Las Vegas.
It was the first time the women, with the team name “The Gypsies,” ever played together. Team members were Elsa Russo, Terry Benetis, Shiloh Edwards. Mary Kester and Kristie Wood.
Bernie Pavlock, who owns Avon Oaks in Girard and is the league operator, put the team together. Avon Oaks is where the team considers their home base.
The women went undefeated at the tournament.
“We were on fire. It was mean to be. We had a lot of great rolls. A lot of good things happened to us. It was pretty great,” Russo said.
“It puts northeast Ohio on the map. We have been sending teams, men’s teams, open teams, 9-ball teams, to Las Vegas for over 20 years. And we have taken fifth place and second place, and these ladies just shot lights out and won it all,” Pavlock said.
The Gypsies team presented Pavlock with a plaque representing their victory in Las Vegas after they returned.
