Veteran honored for service 45 years later

WARREN, Ohio (WYTV) – A local veteran was honored Monday for service to the country dating back 45 years.

U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) presented 10 military service medals, including the Bronze Star, to Thomas Ducharme.

Ducharme served in the Army as an aviation specialist, a drill sergeant and recruiter from 1965 to 1973. The veteran said it’s a privilege to be recognized for medals he earned so long ago.

At Ducharme’s request, the ceremony was held at the restaurant he owns, the Texas Big Dog in Warren, because that is where he now spends most of his time.

“I still feel like all the young people should do some type of service whether it be military or community type service, something that represents how they feel about their country,” said Ducharme.

Ducharme said his best memory is coming home from Vietnam.
