YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WYTV) – Mahoning County’s newest judge started her job on Thursday.

With her husband Robert holding the Bible, Shirley Christian took her oath from Common Pleas Judge Scott Krichbaum in front of a large crowd inside the Mahoning County Courthouse Rotunda. Christian was appointed by Gov. John Kasich to fill out the remaining two years of Judge James Evans’ term.

Evans retired from the bench on Wednesday.

The new judge said her nearly three decades of practice as a trial lawyer will be invaluable.

“I am comfortable in the courthouse. I know the staff. I know the procedures. I know the way things work and I know that will help me in the future in terms of making the transition from trial lawyer to judge.

Christian said she plans to run to keep the seat in two years when the current term ends.
