NILES, Ohio (WYTV) – A large tree caused a bit of commotion Friday morning in Niles after it toppled over onto a car.
Dean Pitts sent took moments after the maple tree fell. He and his family were eating breakfast at their home on Cherry Street when they heard the crash.
“I thought the vehicle hit the house. We came out and saw that it was a tree that collapsed,” Pitts said. “It actually rocked the house and everything.”
The tree trunk crushed his neighbors black Chevy Impala. Champagne Lowery said she loved her aunt’s car and more than just the vehicle was damaged.
“It is just so horrible. My baby brother is mad about his car seat. We are made about the whole car,” Lowery said.
The tree not only crushed the car, but also took out part of Maureen Katsch’s roof and porch on her house across the street. A window was also broken and a utility line was taken down.
“It sounded like a train hit the house. I came out to look and I couldn’t see anything with the branches in front of me,” Katsch said.
Niles crews worked quickly to cut up the tree and remove the trunk from the top of the car.
Neighbors said it was a little windy at the time, but officials believe the tree fell because of rotting. No one was hurt.
